לאחר הפירוק הגדול, האפר שקע והערים נשאו את צלקות הזעם המשוחרר. מנהיגי הארצות השבורות, מביטים בחורבנם של יריביהם, ראו את בבואתם משתקפת ברִיק. לא נחתמו חוזים ולא פורסמו צווים; ובכל זאת, ברית שאינה כתובה נטבעה בתודעה. מנועי ההרס לא חדלו לפעול, אלא המשיכו לחרוק בשקט במעמקים. לא שלום הוא שכבל את ידם, אלא חשבונאות הכוח – הבנה עמוקה שאסון נוסף יפורר את שלד השלטון הרעוע. וכך הם המתינו וצפו, בתוך השארים, מאמינים כי רגע האש המכרעת עוד יעלה מן האפר שזרעו במו דבריהם הכוזבים והחלטותיהם האומללות.
